A Friend Indeed!

The Connections We Build

Throughout my life I’ve known acquaintances that have turned into friends and friends that have turned into acquaintances. All of them have brought something to my life whether through caring, sharing or clearing. Just because the plan is not for them to stay doesn’t mean their presence and/or effect isn’t beneficial, all experiences have the gift of lessons learned which bring about some form of personal growth and wisdom.

Not every experience has been a joyful one but I have always been able to find the lesson, maybe not right away but eventually and knowing that there is always something to be gained and that “everything happens for a reason” helps to keep me from having regrets. I try to approach every new experience with an open heart, open mind and eyes wide open without bringing anything from the past except the wisdom gained. That’s not always easy especially if there are similarities and warning bells going off but all of us are unique therefore the experiences will also be unique regardless if something feels the same, sometimes past emotions of “hurt” can cause you to overthink. Sometimes continually reminding yourself that “all experiences are not the same” is a necessity to keep your head on the level.

look for the learning

The human experience is supposed to be challenging, if it weren’t don’t you think you would be bored and looking for a challenge? I don’t think it’s supposed to just be go to work, earn your money, make house and then surrender when you get to old age. It’s the experiences in between that make up the life, the connections that don’t necessarily have any kind of shared history but manifest when nothing monumental is happening, they create the memories and nice pictures we keep in our minds and hearts to strengthen these connections.

These connections whether they have history or not become a strong foundation, I believe it’s just the occurrence of souls finding other familiar souls. Souls, like friends, travel though many lives together and because of the human experience we don’t know or remember the past lives but our souls do, we just naturally gravitate toward one another and experience an instant connection like we’ve known each other forever.

Have you ever felt that kind of instant and strong connection with someone?

If so, has it continued to strengthen over time?

Do you continually discover new things about them that are oddly but warmly familiar?

A lot of friends and acquaintances that come, go or stay in your life bring with them the challenges that will help to shape you as you go forward through life and for me it’s been the friend that keeps me on the rails, pumped up enough to persevere but grounded enough to remain humble that has helped me the most. I find though that even the new friends and connections I make now are more in alignment with my path because I have more direction in my life than I did when I was in my 20’s and more interest in the quality of it, the meaningless tends to fall away over time.

care enough to be there

It is great though when people who you have lost touch with that held a special place in your life come back in to once again share and connect. I believe we do transition both in and out of people lives at certain times not for any other reason than that there is another path we need to be on to grow and when/if those paths eventually meet up again what comes with it is a warmth of familiarity and history.

Don’t waste your connections, they may be Priceless!

Come and Gone

Everyone leaves their Mark!

The memory of those we’ve lost will carry on within those they’ve known and/or inspired.  Everyone leaves an indelible mark on the people whose lives they’ve truly touched, whether it was for a short or long period of time.

People within all walks of life can inspire personal growth and positive change in someone and their status in life is irrelevant.  It’s who you are with others, how you treat them and in turn how they respond that makes the difference.  My #1 mantra in life as quoted by Ralph Waldo Emerson below is the mark I want to leave.  I know I’ve quoted it often but it bears repeating for they are truly words to live by and aspire to.

ralph waldo emerson quote

What got me thinking about this particular topic have been all the awards shows that have been airing in the last couple of weeks.  There is a certain point in every awards show that is my favorite moment for two reasons and both touch opposite sides of the emotional spectrum.  It is the point when acknowledgement of those in their industry that they have lost for that specific year are remembered.

  • I’m Happy, because they are being honored for their contribution and because I’ve have had the opportunity to see the beauty of work they’ve created through their unique style of artistic expression.

and;

  • I’m Sad, because they are gone and I won’t see their specific brand of artistic expression again and especially so when the loss is at an earlier age.  All life is valuable but the loss seems to feel greater when there was so much more life ahead.

Even though they are gone it is likely that they’ve inspired one or many other artists in one way or another and through that inspiration emulation of the admired aspect will allow that artist to have some version of themselves live on through the generations.  The reason we know of them is not because they are greater than others but because the profession they have chosen to enter into is highly publicized.

I use the entertainment/celebrity world as contrast here because there are many people that touch and affect our lives and even though they aren’t highly publicized in life it doesn’t diminish the mark they’ve left.  That is evidenced every day through the various expressions of remembering and memorializing our loved ones so that our most cherished memories of them continue to have positive influence in our lives.

I believe that one of the most influential figures of this time has been Princess Diana, obviously not everyone in the world met or had a connective bond with her personally but her impact globally was epic.

Assumably for most, like myself, I had developed an attachment, an appreciation for her not only because of what she presented but because that presentation was authentically herself without any excuse and that is what made her real, we could identify with her on many levels.

Similarly I can develop just as much appreciation but to a greater extent for those that I have personal connection to and their impact on me is stronger because of that close connection.

Connection to others through whatever wavelength you channel has the opportunity to grow and strengthen the bond as time and shared experiences evolve.  Each of those connections leave imprints on our psyche and in our hearts that transcend beyond the physical world.

I am a creative mix of my family and heritage as well as the environment I grew up in, influenced by many people that have left their mark in my life even if they weren’t aware of it.  I’ve had the pleasure of observing and learning from people that have had such a positive influence on my life just by modelling aspects that I admire and aspire to emulate.  These qualities that I have most admired in these people have helped shape my personality and enriched my life and in that regard some version of them will live on through me because of it.

Bring It On!

Facing the Challenge

Challenges not only define our character but they build it as well.

Who are you really?  Are you someone that pushes the limits to achieve because you feel so strongly that it is your destined path?  Or do you say to yourself “I’m not sure, I’ll sit back and wait” and then never try because it’s easier?

I am someone who pushes the limits, I like a challenge, I think for me that comes from being an athlete in competitive team sports.  I don’t get as much athletic sport in as I used to, responsibilities are more in demand but competition has always been very inspiring and motivating for me.  Chances are if you’ve ever taken part in any team sport “sitting back and waiting” isn’t a desired skill of any team player, you have to get in there and dig a little.

Although being a team player doesn’t necessarily mean that “pushing the limits” is carried out in your daily life as well, you may feel you’re not as confident alone as you are with the team.  It all depends on you personally, what your goals and intentions are and how strongly you feel about what you want out of this life.

adversity

Recently I had to adapt to a difficult and challenging experience and I have to admit that while in the midst of it I did not feel very strong but now through it and out on the other side I’ve found that it has expanded my awareness and opened my beliefs to a higher level of appreciation.  Every life experience, no matter the level of difficulty, is there to teach us something.  We all go through experiences that ultimately are there to make us a better person and we have two choices.  We can either recognize, learn and grow from them or we can ignore them and wallow in our dislike of the experiences.

Obviously the more challenging the experience the greater the demand is for inner strength to endure it and depending on the circumstances and how much support you have around you, it can affect how well you cope.  Sometimes being alone can put you in the company of your worst enemy.

I’ve had conversations with others who have evoked the same emotion at that moment that they felt at the time when recalling something that made them sad.  It’s amazing how the heart can hold onto an emotion for what seems like an eternity even well after a challenging transition has concluded.  I think sometimes it can feel surprising that our emotion just sits there below the surface, dormant until something triggers it.

I feel that this recent experience was meant to break me open yet again to propel me onto a new path and eventually when I do take a glance back to see how far I’ve come I will be surprised, monumental change is ahead and it’s all positive!

My faith was challenged, as was my inner strength but now I say “Bring it On!”, I have the determination to not let my challenges or tests break or weaken me, I know they are meant to make me stronger.  It all starts with taking that “leap of faith”; a real “leap of faith” means believing in something so fiercely that there is no possibility for any other outcome other than that which you believe in.  That belief cannot be deterred by circumstance, delay or setbacks; it is ignited by signs and omens that insinuate and fan the flames of our imagination and intuition of that which we see in our mind’s eye and will come to be.

Remember, it’s not about what you take with you, it’s about what you build and authenticity is the most important character trait you can possess.  Genuine, heartfelt emotional connections to others are the bread of life and it’s through those connections that we find who we are meant to be, what we are meant to do and where we are meant to go and ultimately who will be with us.

Those kindred spirits are the ones we are meant to connect with, the ones we travel through this life with and the ones we can’t do without.  Build that life and only happiness can follow.

best things must be felt
