Choosing the Higher Ground

By Picking your Battles

I heard the phrase “picking your battles” years ago in relation to parenting and while you may have the best intention for wanting to guide your children towards their best life you can’t expect to bulldoze your way through without allowing their inner spirit to also have a voice.  In picking the battles that are the most important to you as well as allowing those that are the most important to your children it provides them with the understanding for the foundation of compromise through communication and balance in finding middle ground.

While I had initially become aware of this during my daughter’s younger years what I’ve realized is that this expression is not isolated to just parenting your child.  It transcends into all relationships and is an important reminder for us all when working through any kind of difficulty.

Sometimes the more empowering path you can take is to choose the higher ground even when you feel you are in the right.  Wayne Dyer referenced this quote by R.J. Palacio “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind”.  We should always be choosing kind, it’s not just about taking the moral high ground but also about embracing a little humility and grace for others along the way.  Sensitivity towards others even if it isn’t reciprocated is emancipation for your soul, a feeling you soon won’t forget and likely something you will want to repeat.

Forgiveness is a powerful thing, first for yourself and then for others.  Holding onto anger, resentment or bitterness damages more within you than against that which you despise, condemn or blame.

What has your disappointment cost you?

I think the best way to evaluate this is to look at how present a past experience is in your daily life, does it in any way inhabit your thoughts, words, behaviour or actions?  Is it preventing you from moving forward?  Is it influencing how you feel about yourself negatively?  Do you feel exhausted and drained so much so that you know your best option is to just put the baggage down and walk freely ahead?

What is your peace worth?

Peace of mind is not something you can buy but the value of your peace should be priceless!  It is only through letting go of that which no longer serves you that you find your peace.  Peace is whatever you define it to be for you whether that is harmony of the soul, freedom from disturbance or tranquility of the mind.  It is whatever resonates within that allows you complete relief from the burdens that have run you down and threaten your happiness in life.

What’s in your heart?

Stillness speaks volumes!  It’s so important to hear and heed the whispers, listen to what has been placed on your heart and you will find your passion and purpose.  No matter what that is, no matter how possible or impossible it seems, follow it.  Everything in us has been placed there for a reason, reasons you may not know yet but are meant to lead you into your best life.  Don’t challenge what you feel, embrace it.

What does your soul tell you?

While it’s important to follow your heart, it’s also important to listen to your soul, your inner voice, your gut instinct.  When you allow your heart (your emotion) to be heard and connect it with your soul (your inner voice) you become the spirit warrior you were meant to and everything that once felt like obstacles begin to fall away.  You allow yourself to live passionately which aligns you with your life’s purpose.  Don’t let yourself to settle for anything less!

Letting go to forgive, to heal, to move forward is for others but mostly for you, it allows you to accept and release yourself from the outcome you wanted and expected to see.

Raise yourself up and stand on the higher ground, some battles aren’t worth the fight especially if you lose something of yourself in it.  Return your power to where it belongs, with you!

Things May Change but ……

Your Heart Always Knows!

Don’t believe anything other than what you have placed inside your heart, you are the only one that knows what is true for you.  Let your belief in yourself be greater than any doubt whether that is internal dialogue created by external experiences or opinions.  Live only your truth!

The truth of who you really are, your deepest and secret desires, they have all been placed within from as far back as you can remember.  Those dreams you had early on in life may or may not have evolved much from your original vision but where they came from does not change.  Your heart wants what it wants and the only way to prevent inner conflict is not going against that.  Choose to support yourself and the dreams that the younger version of you had hoped for.  There is no guide or timeline to follow that says when you get to a certain point in life you have passed the opportunity of going after your dreams, your dreams do not have an expiry date!

Your heart always knows how to get you to where you want to go although that isn’t as easily followed as it may sound.  Your heart is vulnerable when being authentic and easily hurt yet strong enough to rise again when opposed.

I clipped a piece from Max Ehrmann’s “Desiderata” poem below which I felt was most in alignment in describing how special each of us are, your authentic self, without prejudice or compromise.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

What is the true essence of your authentic self?

  • I think it takes a fair amount of time and experiences to find your comfort level with being genuine and it’s not just through the child and teen years that you can experience these growing pains. It’s through this growth though that your true essence takes on its beautiful and unique form.

Do you believe your authentic self is too vulnerable to show to others?

  • It’s strange that as you grow you are shaped by the ideas, opinions and definitions of “normal” as seen by the society around you. Ironically when you get to the point of showing your authenticity it’s not at all far from who you were at the beginning, you just have a little more wisdom and experience.

As your awareness to all these little nuances develop you will begin to see how they can positively enhance your life for the better and understand the power of a moment.

If you knew that every moment, every encounter and every experience in being authentic gives you the opportunity for a soul to soul connection you may start to realize how precious these moments of imprinting are.

It is within connecting that you develop those little moments, not with every single person but those you truly blend with and sometimes those you don’t expect to blend with.  That moment when nothing really monumental is happening but you feel instantaneously close with someone which I believe is a true soul to soul connection, an “authentic moment”.

If you haven’t had any experiences like this wouldn’t you want to?  Being authentic doesn’t just show your heart it allows your inner spirit to shine, connect and love.

There are many things we can learn from others through connecting.  I’ve had the privilege of connecting with others who unbeknownst to them have taught me through their example how and what to embrace to be the person I want to become.  One thing they all have in common is authenticity, a genuine compassion for others, a beautiful heart and of course a great sense of humor.

Through all of these impactful people I was liberated and at a pace that didn’t feel overwhelming, they all helped me to learn and love my authenticity, to feel comfortable and confident and to always follow my heart.

Lighten Up!

And Let the Love Flow

Are you struggling in any or all areas of your life?  Does it feel like something is holding you back from the changes you want to see occur?  It all starts with your thoughts, specifically your dominant ones, which thoughts are you encouraging, embellishing and embracing?  Are you letting the experiences in your life that have hurt you define and shape the story and direction of your life?  The time to change is now and it begins with letting go of that which no longer serves you.

Ease up, relax and settle back into your authentic self, dig deep down if you have to but get in touch with who you are at your soul level.  If you are feeling the grips of struggle it is likely that part of you hasn’t had a voice for a while and you would be doing yourself a great kindness by re-connecting.

Your answers, where you want to go and what you want to see change are found within the silence.  If you have long forgotten what you wanted in life or aren’t sure anymore then you really need to pay attention to those whisperings, they come from your heart and your soul and they won’t lead you in the wrong direction.

To see the manifestation of your dreams and all you desire you must set your intention and then blend with the energetic flow of least resistance.  It is actually easier to do than you may think, it’s as easy as breathing.  The only reason letting go seems to be so difficult is because you have become too accustomed to going against the stream instead of allowing it to carry you.

Have you ever noticed how relaxed, happy and zen anyone who has seen their dreams and desires manifest are?  Of course they would be happy because they are finally “living their dream” but it’s also because stepping into that state began with letting go, having faith and trusting in the divine to lead you to your true destiny, whatever that may be.  There is much comfort and ease in that state of being, more than you may realize and definitely more than anyone trying to discourage you will acknowledge.

When you feel like you are constantly in the challenges of life you are not relaxed, happy or zen, you are stressed.  Has the amount of stress you put on yourself in any given situation every positively changed the outcome?  I would bet no, simply because I have done this to myself, more than once actually, and every time it’s been a total waste of energy that I could have put to better positive use.

I’ve noticed that the times when I’ve felt relaxed, happy and zen that my life flows with much more ease and in hindsight I find myself recognizing the patterned dysfunction of it all and wondering why when I know I am doing this to myself do I continue to embrace it?  Simple, it’s a conditioning that needs to be broken, changed, re-aligned and re-formatted into a positively charged pattern, this takes discipline and time so don’t get discouraged.

From the time we are young we are conditioned to be fearful, something for sure is going to catch up with you and ruin your “not likely to achieve” dreams.  We are told to be realistic and not to expect too much, the world doesn’t just give you all the breaks.  Ok, for a small part of that I will agree and I will tell you why.  It is true you aren’t going to get all the breaks at least not for free, you are actually going to have to do the work.  Anything worth having is worth working for, you can’t just ask for abundance and then do nothing to work toward it but as long as you put your intention out there, believe in it, feel it, blend it with that energy and then do your work the opportunity for those breaks begin to open up.

When you do the work you will find your confidence, self-worth and personal empowerment begin to grow and after a while the work doesn’t seem as hard now as it was at the beginning and that is because the first step of this journey is letting go.

Changing that thought so that you are no longer holding onto the fear is the most difficult and monumental part of positive change but it can be done!

  • What do you want to see manifest in your life?
  • What are you willing to do to make it happen?

Get out there now, the sky is your limit!

Moving Forward

Evolving Means Change!

Not all things are lost during times of transition, some roots are strong enough to stand the test of time and there are both internal and external factors to consider within all experiences.

Sometimes things can get to the point where there is nothing left to give and no will to try because so much has been broken down that there is nothing left to build on.

I think that determination depends on what lies in your past, what you want to see in your future and whether or not you believe your consideration can stand that test of time.steve-jobs-on-finding-your-truth

When it comes down to evaluating the importance of all that you think is important right now in your life you may learn that what you placed value on doesn’t have the real value you had thought, especially within the bigger picture.

Sometimes we make decisions out of fear, sometimes out of emotion but a decision that isn’t in alignment with your inner spirit will always create conflict within because it just doesn’t feel right in your heart and that feeling is your confirmation.  If you are honoring your true spirit you will feel a sense of inner peace in everything you do.

We all have things to get past, everyone has something in their history they may feel shame and/or regret about but it starts with acceptance.  From acceptance comes forgiveness, and not in the way you may be thinking or expecting, a definition as quoted by Oprah Winfrey:

  • Forgiveness does not mean you have to accept the person back into your life.
  • It does not mean you are condoning what they did or that you are in any way saying it was OK what they did.
  • Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could have been any different.

From forgiveness comes the opportunity to start anew and there are many ways to change your life for the better.  You can do it in small steps or make a plan to change it all around at once but taking advantage of the opportunity to positively change your life is entirely yours to do.

I find there are great sources of inspiration within everything around us, in particular through verbal communication, whether you are in conversation with someone or observing it.  There are many great quotes & lines out there and I can really identify with this one from the movie “For Love of the Game”, which I thought was a good portrayal of the “out of body” experience one somewhat feels when reflecting on their life, choices and decisions they’ve made throughout.

“I used to believe, I still do, that if you give something your all, everything you have, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose as long as you risked everything, put everything out there”

I live my life this way, not for any other reason than because I just can’t see living life any other way.  These are not just words but a path in life that offers the most rewards, through vision, karma and law of attraction.  Everything and everyone in your life is enriched by any experience and/or relationship that you bring your heart and spirit to.
